Ben Sherman and Stephen Watson have built a culture of great staff, good food, and gracious company over the last several years at Midway Pizza on Freret Street. With a true neighborhood feel and “the best staff in the city,” the pizza joint is proud to be a staple for the Freret corridor. Co-owner Ben Sherman sat with Uptown Messenger—on his birthday of all days—to talk big about the restaurant, their great staff, and the neighbors he loves so much.

The High Hat Cafe, Ancora, Company Burger, and Dat Dog are some of the young Freret eateries assembling small cults of devoted diners, but perhaps Midway Pizza, the brainchild of Kingpin owners Ben Sherman and Steve Watson, is burrowing deepest into the Uptown neighborhood, turning itself into the sort of friendly, around-the-corner pizza joint that parents can take their kids to, so that one day those kids can grow up, move far away, and tell tales about the legendary pizza place in their hometown.

The pizza is available in deep dish or thin crust, and the menu has a lot of great pizza options, as well as salads and apps. They also have an extensive draft beer selection, making it perfect for anyone looking to hunker down and enjoy a beer or six to wash down the cheesey doughy deliciousness.

Midway has been known for years for it's “Freret Jet” lunch buffet. Cancelled in spring 2020, the buffet is back! A small salad plus unlimited pizza for $11.95 makes for a steal. It's simple, its ready quick, and makes for a perfect lunch, weekdays from 1130am to 2pm. If you aren't in a hurry, wash that pizza down with a few local craft beers.

Casual, buddy-friendly Midway is hearty, stick to your gut pie in the true sense of the word (it’s a challenge to eat more than two slices). A fairly extensive and creative menu draws from both traditional Italian toppings as well as definitively American primal urges like barbecue sauce, roasted chicken, and meatballs.
